According to the Tyrol police, the boy was training with a group at around 11:30 a.m. on red run number 3. While making a left turn, he lost control at high speed, broke through the safety barrier, and fell onto the rocky ground below the slope.
Ski patrol staff at the resort provided him with initial medical treatment at the scene. He was later airlifted by medical helicopter to a hospital in the city of Innsbruck, suffering from serious injuries to his back and face.
The boy's identity, as well as the identity of the training group he was participating in, was not released. The authorities also did not provide further details about his medical condition.
The Hintertux Glacier is located at the far end of the Zillertal valley in the Tyrol region and is considered one of Austria's highest and best-known ski resorts. Its skiing conditions allow activities to take place outside the winter season, making it a popular training destination for many racing teams during their preseason preparations.
The ski resort reopened on October 2, following a break of approximately two and a half months during the summer. It features dedicated training runs that attract competitive skiers from around the world ahead of the start of the European racing season.
