Emergency services were called shortly after 10 a.m., and a search and rescue operation was launched. The man was located shortly afterward, unconscious. People at the scene tried to assist him, but he was pronounced dead at the scene. His body was recovered, and the incident will be referred for examination by the coroner.

The identity of the deceased and the circumstances of his arrival in the avalanche area have not yet been released.

Mount Dixon, also known as Dixon Peak, rises to an elevation of 3,004 meters and is located in New Zealand's Southern Alps, above the Tasman Glacier and near the Great Plateau. The area is known for challenging alpine climbing routes and exposed glaciated terrain.

The national park also includes Aoraki/Mount Cook, New Zealand's highest peak, which stands at 3,724 meters. Alongside extensive glaciers and steep mountain walls, the area attracts climbers and backcountry skiers from around the world, but conditions there can be dangerous even when the weather appears favorable.
