The ski season has opened: Finland is already sliding into winter

While most ski resorts in Europe are still waiting for the first snowflakes, Finland's ski season officially opened today (October 2, 2026). The leading resorts in Lapland, Levi (Levi) and Ruka (Ruka), welcomed the season's first skiers to snowy, professionally groomed slopes.

The Finnish secret: snow from the summer

This early opening is not a weather miracle, but the result of smart technology called "snow farming." During the previous winter, huge quantities of snow were collected and stored under insulating blankets and sawdust to protect them from the summer heat. With the arrival of October, the snow is spread across the mountains again, enabling the slopes to open quickly, regardless of the current weather or snow cannons.

The world's longest season

Thanks to this method, Finland offers one of the longest and most reliable ski seasons in the world, expected to last more than 200 days—until May 2027. While Levi and Ruka are already open, additional major resorts in the country, such as Ylläs (Ylläs) and Pyhä (Pyhä), are expected to gradually join the celebration during November.
