A 55-year-old American tourist was killed on Monday, September 28, 2026, after falling into a crevasse on the Breithorn Plateau above Zermatt, Switzerland. The accident occurred shortly after 12:00, in the glacier area near the Klein Matterhorn.
The incident occurred around midday at an altitude of 3,883 meters above sea level. According to reports from the authorities and the Valais Cantonal Police, the man entered, for reasons that are unclear, a fenced-off restricted area of the glacier and ski slopes that was completely closed to pedestrians, where he slipped into a deep crevasse in the ice.

Airborne rescue teams were immediately dispatched to the scene upon receiving the report, but after complex search operations deep inside the glacier, they were forced to pronounce him dead at the scene. The district prosecutor's office launched a formal investigation to determine the circumstances of the incident.
This is the second American tourist to lose his life in the Swiss Alps within just two months, heightening official warnings to travelers in the area about strictly adhering to marked trails.
