4 killed in a deadly avalanche in the Himalayas, 12 still missing

A powerful avalanche struck the base camp of Himlung Himal in Nepal. Four staff members were found dead, and 12 others are still missing in difficult weather conditions.

The avalanche struck the base camp of Himlung Himal on Sunday, a 7,126-meter-high peak in the Manang District of northern Nepal. The victims were Nepali staff members, including climbing guides and expedition workers who had gone ahead of the foreign climbers to prepare the camp and secure ropes ahead of the ascent.

The incident occurred after heavy snowfall and prolonged rain in the area. Rescue teams had to contend with a layer of snow and avalanche debris that reportedly reached approximately 14 feet, more than four meters, along with cold, limited visibility, and the danger of further avalanches.

So far, four bodies have been recovered. Twelve people are still listed as missing, and search and rescue operations have been temporarily suspended due to the dangerous conditions on the mountain. They are expected to resume when the weather and terrain permit.

The disaster comes during a period of extreme weather in Nepal, where heavy rains have also caused flooding and landslides in other parts of the country.
