Winter refuses to leave New Zealand.

A strong cold front is moving across New Zealand today, September 27, bringing wintry conditions back to the South Island, with snow at low elevations, strong winds, and possible travel disruptions.

In the Southland, Otago, and Canterbury areas, snow may fall as low as approximately 400–500 meters, while in mountainous areas there is a possibility of 10–15 cm of snow accumulating within a few hours.

The Queenstown area and the Southern Alps are also being affected by the system, bringing particularly interesting additional snowfall toward the end of the ski season.

The new snow arrives while several of the major ski resorts on the South Island are still in their 2026 season. It may improve skiing conditions ahead of the final weeks of the season, but strong winds and snow on access roads could also cause delays or temporary closures of lifts and resorts.
