How to dress properly for off-piste skiing

When backcountry skiing, safety preparation is not limited to avalanche rescue gear. Choosing the right clothing layers is also a key part of being able to move efficiently, manage sweat and heat on ascents, and stay protected when stopping or when conditions change. Unlike a day of resort skiing, the intensive movement involved in ascending requires a breathable, flexible clothing system that balances ventilation and insulation.

The guiding principle for ski touring is moisture management: the body generates heat quickly on the ascent, but as soon as you stop, sweat trapped in your clothes can make you cold. The system should therefore combine a base layer that wicks moisture away from the skin, mid-layers that can be adjusted easily, and finally a protective layer against wind and precipitation.

Base layer: Moisture wicking above all else

The first layer should focus on moving sweat away from the skin and speeding up evaporation. Some will choose a thin, moisture-wicking shirt, while others will prefer a long-sleeved base layer. You can also use a thin, highly breathable fleece as the first part of the system, as long as it is a technical garment that minimizes moisture buildup and reduces the risk of getting cold during breaks.

Lightweight active layer: Stay warm without sweating

Depending on the temperature and the intensity of the ascent, you may sometimes be able to move in just the base layer or add a lightweight, breathable fleece for a little extra insulation. The key is to avoid overheating while moving so that you do not reach a stop with your clothes soaked in sweat.

Main insulation layer: Synthetic fabric is preferable

Over the base and fleece layers, an insulating layer that can perform even when damp from sweat or light precipitation is recommended, which is why synthetic insulation is preferable. The idea is to use a garment that allows movement and some ventilation while retaining body heat when you stop or the wind picks up. The choice between different models depends mainly on comfort, fit, and price, as long as three conditions are met: sufficient warmth, reasonable breathability, and synthetic insulation.

Emergency layer in your pack: A lightweight, packable down jacket

For long routes or days with an unstable forecast, it is advisable to carry a lightweight, compressible down jacket in your pack for comfort and safety. It is intended for weather changes, prolonged stops, or when someone in the group needs an extra layer. However, down loses its effectiveness when wet, so on wet days or in heavy precipitation, carefully consider what you rely on and, at times, carry both down and synthetic insulation.

Outer layer: Blocks wind and precipitation

An outer layer that protects against wind and precipitation is essential over everything else. A heavy ski jacket is not always necessary; in many cases, a lightweight rain jacket will do an excellent job while keeping weight down. In relatively dry conditions or light snow, a garment that protects against wind and drizzle may be sufficient, but if wet precipitation, heavy snow, or a mix of rain and snow is expected, it is better to choose a more durable, waterproof layer.

Pants and socks: Minimalism suited to exertion

For the lower body, many people prefer a simple, breathable solution to avoid overheating on the ascent: a lightweight layer under ski pants, and sometimes no full thermal layer at all. Those who tend to get cold, or who make more moderate ascents, can add a thin, long layer under their outer pants. Wool socks are recommended for the feet because they regulate moisture, stay warm even when slightly damp, and are suitable for a long day. It is also worth considering an extra pair to change into at the end or if they get wet.

Ultimately, the layering system varies from person to person according to their tendency to run warm or cold, the nature of the route, and the pace of movement. The recommendation is to start with a basic system, test it in the field, and make adjustments until you achieve a balance between ventilation and insulation while maintaining comfort and safety.
